Finally here after many years in the heads of the creators and 18 months in construction.
Boardwalk café and boatshed coffee house are here to breathe new life into Darwin’s Eat Street @ Cullen bay Avenue offering a combination of the finest Australian seafood and succulent cuts of meat. After an extensive make over, this 5 star venue is guaranteed to exceed your expectations with its great value for money.
The Boardwalk concept has been carefully thought out to offer a much needed value for money dining opportunity in Cullen Bay. While other eating precincts are offering cheap eats, the Boardwalk will use only Australian seafood.
The Boatshed occupying a previously unused breeze way has been extensively fitted out with much help from local art and furniture guru Wayne Miles. A diverse environment is the outcome with seating ranging from the busy street scene to quieter lounge rooms with croc skin ottomans and a boardroom. All finished with artifacts hand crafted by Wayne. Sitting around a coffee bar made from a life size Indonesian timber fishing boat sounds like a great way to wake up in the morning. Once you are ready to face the day, interstate papers, wireless internet and even share trading are all possible over some Bircher muesli or a gourmet breakfast wrap, And the best coffee in Darwin available all day.
During the first few months of trading the Boatshed evolved into Darwin’s first real coffee house, boasting the choice of coffee from three leading coffee purveyors including our signature label Giancarlo and a Barista eager to create the perfect coffee or gourmet tea of your choice. While sticking to the whole concept of simple value for money dining the Boatshed fills the gap in eat street for a funky venue offering simple early morning breakfasts and light lunches.
The boardwalk concept encapsulates the territory lifestyle and climate in every essence.
Marrying local seafood including of course the iconic barramundi with other popular seafood from the rest of Australia’s shores, with the relaxed carefree lifestyle the locals enjoy. It was easy to create a dining experience when our canvas was a previously unused glass atrium overlooking vast deck areas on the picturesque Cullen bay marina.
While Cullen bay has previously been coined an expensive dining precinct only accessible for the use of the affluent, we strove to break this myth and reoffer this city based playground to all. Through value for money food, casual service and a great family dining venue which boasts a kid’s room and activities to keep children of all ages occupied.
While the setting has been created of a wharf eatery the Boardwalk café is much more!
In an endeavor to create a unique self service concept we came up with not only a simple food ordering system, comprising of a tick box order form on every table which is taken up to the counter and exchanged for a pager to alert you when your food is ready , but the bottle shop is a must see! Drinks are purchased from our own self serve bottle shop eliminating the need to catch the eye of a busy waiter or standing in a queue at the bar. With galvanized buckets at the door you browse the fridges and wine rack for your beverages upon which are all put on ice after purchasing, kids aren’t left out –you can get them a bottom less cup for the post mix machine.
A bucket of beer on ice on the Boardwalk looking over all the boats, does it get any better than that?
While we are currently experiencing our first wet season at Boardwalk which is proving to offer not only airconditioned shelter from the build up but giving great views from within the Boatshed looking through the glass at our great thunderstorms and on the clearer nights outside on the deck customers are enjoying the calm that follows the afternoon storm that many southerners only hear about on the evening news.
We are looking forward to the 2008 dry season where we plan to open Sundays for an afternoon session on the boardwalk and spilling into the adjoining park with live music and spit roasts.
